Perspectives on Power in Organizations
Question: Describe about the Perspectives on Power in Organizations. Answer: Perspectives on Power in Organizations Cameron Anderson and Sebastien Brion: Power is considered to be one of the most critical resources in the organisation. Hence, it becomes very important to understand the way the individuals acquire these powers and when other do not. Some of the individuals are bale to retain these powers when the others fail to retain the same. This happens even in the case wherein there are many of the political advantages are involved. The reason that has been thought in this is the fact of the process that unfolds over the period of time and the review of the research speaks is very much related with the dynamics such as the acquisition, maintenance and the loss of the power. There are many of the psychological and the organisational literatures on the concept of power which has a number of different dimensions of the term such as the acquisition, maintenance and the loss of the power. There is an involvement of science due to which the individuals fails to succeeds in the competition of the power but still the amount of the work remains to be the same. It is very important to understand the various different abuses of the power by the various CEOs that have to self-serving behaviours and that has contributed towards the contribution of their downfalls not only of themselves but also of their organizations. It is also very important to understand the holders of the power and their engagement in the self-serving and the behaviours of the group oriented people since the former helps in the holding of the power and also helps in earning the livelihood of the ones that hols some power. There are many of the future issues that have to be looked into. These includes the reconciliation between the groups that serve power and the one that have the self-serving behaviours. Power is considered to be collective and the group serving and also personal and self-serving behaviours. The research to be undertaken in the future must include the description of the conditions that lead the holders of the power in such of the behaviour and the impact of the same on the likelihood of the holders of the power to acquire, maintain and loss of the power. The second issue is the culture. Then sex etc. (Anderson et al, 2016). Organizational power in perspective by Amarjit Singh: There has been some evidence with regard to the use of the authoritative or the coercive or the forceful styles of the power of the people that affects the long term health of the organization. There have been researches that have shown that the authoritative power is somewhat based on the results of the poor performance and the productivity in the industrial and the settings of the various organizations. Also, whereas on the other hand, there is an expert power and also the referent power which is somewhat effective form of the power. This includes the following characteristics: They are the ones that provide a support to the manager They endanger the climate of the positive organization It helps in achieving great heights in the career and also promotes the growth in the personality One of the most influential base of the use of the work challenge can be nurtured through the exertion of the power There are many positive uses of the power. The coercive power on the on other side has the following negative characteristics: Causes psychological imbalance Promotes hatred, rebellious nature and self-pity Is very abusive in nature and is not concerned about the people This would end up in the downfall of the organization which has been used long enough There has been an excessive amount of discipline that has bene enforced and there must be an exercise of caution as against the same in the todays modern organizations. Also in the light of these complexities along with the multiple phases in the project cycle of the management, there are mainly 5 basic bases of power. They are expert, referent, reward, coercive and legitimate that must be applied for the purposes of commensuration to the various different phases of the cycle of work. There is an excessive amount of control that helps in the necessitation of the formal power with the lease resort of the coercive power since there are many of the educated personnel that could be trained for the exercising some normal control over the various functions of the intellect and insight. Information is considered to be power and uncertainty is considered to be the opposite of information. For a person to be able to cope up with the uncertainty, would mean a possession of a good information system which is quite highly correlated with the power base which is considered to be sound in nature (Singh, 2008).
